Maryland - Two youth members from KIDS Illinois and KIDS Hope for Henry/Children's National recently traveled to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Silver Springs, MD to share their stories of living with chronic conditions as ambassadors of iCAN. Isabella O'Brien, a youth member of KIDS Illinois, spoke to the FDA in a session called "Artificial Intelligence in Radiological Imaging Public Workshop" (Follow the FDA on Twitter using the hashtag #medicaldevice) designed to discuss the use of artificial intelligence (AI) through diagnostic imaging. Isabella drew upon her own personal experience of living with a condition that required multiple visits to clinic/hospital imagining to better understand her own healthcare needs. In a separate event, iCAN youth member, Rhiannon Perry from KIDS Hope for Heny/Children's National visited the FDA center to represent pediatric patients for their 'Rare Disease Day' event, "Supporting the Future of Rare Disease in Product Development" in which Rhiannon participated in the filming of special video designed to better understand the importance of clinical research needs for patients living with rare conditions. Rhiannon, will be representing iCAN later this spring during a patient panel at the FDA’s public meeting in Silver Springs, MD, on communicating about the safety of medical devices on April 1, 2020. Way to go, Isabella and Rhiannon on sharing your expert voices!
